Upstate New York County Uses Geocaching to Promote Tourism

In an earlier post we had mentioned that a tourist organization representing the 13 Original Florida counties had set up geocaches in each county to bring more tourists to the area.

According to the Albany, New York Business Review Montgomery County in upstate New York appears to be doing the same.

The Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce said Tuesday it has hidden more than 20 tiny treasures in the county, many of them in parks and historic sites. The chamber has posted some locations and hints on its web site, www.montgomerycountyny.com.

“With the fad catching on locally, we believe this is will be a great way to market tourism for our county,” said Erika Squillace, tourism director for the chamber.

Would that more counties and park systems would be open to the idea! Maybe if we can find more local governments promoting geocaching we will be able to take these ideas to our own local governments and suggest they do the same!
