When I was growing up, my mom always told me that I needed to eat everything I was served, because children in other countries were starving. Of course, she never bothered to explain why our family’s gluttony made everything okay in the rest of the world.

In my youth I had wished my mom would send my vegetables to the starving children, but never considered her remarks as justifying ‘gluttony’ but what else can you call the amount of food we as Americans consume.

Here is a more colorful version of the SummerTomato graphic “How to Find Real Food at the Supermarket” found on page 114 of the ebook. It is amazing how little ‘real’ food is to be found at the grocery store.

Some of my favorites:
“Does it make a health claim” – Like “Gluten Free” or “Low Fat”
“Might contain Bacon anyway”

Which is your favorite ‘yes/no’ question?

Restrictive dieting and excessive workouts won’t get you ahead faster. They actually do the opposite, holding you back both physically and mentally from better health and happiness.

As much as we hope that cutting back on calories and working out more will help us shed those unwanted pounds, they don’t. At least not for the long term. We each only have A finite amount of willpower and if we use it all up on fighting our desire to eat then we will have none available for other areas of our life or after a stressful day we will not have any willpower left to avoid gorging ourselves because hunger rears its head.

Modern weight-loss diets are temporary eating plans that emphasize single nutrients and restriction over real food and lifelong habits. Foodists, in contrast, focus on real, high-quality foods in order to optimize our quality of life.

If your ‘diet’ is something you do until you hit your ‘goal weight’ and then plan on going back to your old eating habits, then you may as well also plan on going back to your original weight. Temporary changes to your diet bring only temporary changes to your weight.

Instead, focus on real food, high-quality food, food that has not been so over-processed that it requires infused salt, sugar, and fat to make it palatable.

The problem was that starving yourself of energy, nutrients, and pleasure is not the most effective way to attain—let alone maintain—the body you want. It is also no way to live your life.

Like monks of old who would flagellate themselves seeking to be more holy, we hope that some tortuous diet will bring our body into submission and deliver us from the evil that makes us fat.
